Changing Jamaica

Many of us left the shores of our homeland in search of new opportunities for ourselves and our families. Some of us are first generation immigrants. Some of us are descendants of original immigrants. Wherever we fall in the chain, we are joined umbilically. We emanated from the same culture, share the same history, have very similar inclinations and are driven by the same spirit. Truth be told, a Jamaican, no matter where they live, will always be a Jamaican.

The reality is that our homeland is not perfect, there are many challenges and issues to overcome. We who have transplanted ourselves in a different land, are in a very good position to draw comparisons and make recommendations for change. Transform we must.

We are well positioned to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of our Jamaica. We are well positioned to provide insight on what constitutes a “developed” country. We are well positioned to indicate where changes in mindset, education, culture, systems, and the nature of leadership are required.

Imagine if Jamaica was transformed from a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. I honestly believe that to be a matter of choice and commitment. As Gandhi articulated: “Be the change you want to see in the world”.

For us, the distinguished members of the Jamaican Diaspora, we know that unity, commitment, and focus are the key factors that will help transform our beautiful homeland into a model that the world will respect and adore.
